While you certainly want to stay true to your own artistic style and write songs that are not a carbon copy of the next big thing in your genre, you also don’t want to misread your audience. For example, fans of John Mayer may have latched onto your recent acoustic singer/songwriter-esque release, but they may jump ship when they hear the synth heavy alt-rock that you’ve been crafting.

When I produce a track, chorus impact accentuators are always on my mind, especially at the final stage. And while I attempt to challenge myself by trying new methods every now and then, I do have some go-to accentuating techniques that I frequently rely on (and I’m not the only producer who does so). A narrative takes it further, beyond the facts into something that pulls fans on a more emotional level. It’s how you got to where you are, the struggles you’ve faced, how you’ve overcome those struggles, and where you’re going.

Why? Often, a lack of empathy for the audiences that support us or the venues that host us is partly to blame. If you’re enthusiastically writing venues in your city but never getting responses, don’t get upset about it — just make an effort to think about the reasons why this could be the case. Are you targeting venues too large and established? Are your recorded demos not good enough to showcase your talent and sound, or do you not even have demos to begin with? (If so, you should rectify that.) Are you sure you’re not making any avoidable spelling, grammar, or colloquial linguistic errors in your booking emails?
